Intarsia Wood Craft

Intarsia is a form of artwork believed to have originated in the 14th century and flourished during that period. Howere, because intarsia was so labor intensive, it was primarily found in the homes of the very elite
Over time, intarsia intarsia became a lost art; however in recent years, due to the modernization of man and equipment, intarsia again had become extremly popular, due to Judy Gale Roberts and other intarsia artists.
A Intarsia will vary in the number of pieces from as few a twelve upward to well over 500. Each piece is hand cut using a bandsaw, or scroll saw, handsanded and shaped to match the next adjoing piece and glued to a luan backing.
The pieces are raised or lowered to create whatever depth or dimension needed to accentuate the specific intarsia design creating a 3-d effect. Each intarsia creation is unique in that no two will ever be identical due to the wood used.
There are no stains or paint used on my intarsia pieces. Each piece of wood is hand selected to its color and grain with many coats of cleat polyurethane applied ot enhance and protect the natural beauty of the wood.
Thise Intarsia piece took a year to finish and has well over 556 pieces. The wood used are western red cedar, pine aspen and walnut
